SC Customer Tagging Alternative for Shopify: Count Your Workflows Before You Pick a Plan

SC Customer Tagging, from Shop Circle, sits at 5.0 stars across 59 reviews. We build a competing app and ours sits at 4.7 across 12, so read this as a comparison written by an interested party — I'd rather say that in the first paragraph than bury it. The interesting thing about SC isn't the rating anyway. It's that the two apps count completely different things, and which meter you're on decides your bill far more than the sticker price does.
Two apps, two meters
Here is SC Customer Tagging's pricing as it reads on its listing today (September 8, 2026). Search the App Store for it and check me — we deliberately don't link to a competitor's install page.
| Plan | Price | Active workflows | Customer tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 | 100 |
| Starter | $5.99 | 10 | 500 |
| Growth | $19.99 | 50 | 1,000 |
| Professional | $49.99 | 100 | 5,000 |
And ours, from our own listing on the same day:
| Plan | Price | Processes included | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 100 | $0.05 each |
| Basic | $5.99 | 200 | $0.04 each |
| Professional | $9.99 | 1,000 | $0.03 each |
| Enterprise | $19.99 | Unlimited | — |
Two numbers per row on their side, two on ours, and almost no overlap in what they mean. SC limits how many rules you may keep switched on and how many tags it will apply. We don't cap rules at all — we count events processed, where an event is one order or customer coming through the queue and being evaluated against every rule you've written.
The number that actually decides it is "1"
Look at SC's free tier again: one active workflow.
Think about what a store genuinely needs on day one. Tag customers who've spent over a threshold so you can build a VIP segment. Tag wholesale accounts so they're excluded from retail campaigns. Tag first-time buyers separately from repeat buyers. Tag by country when your shipping rules differ. Tag anyone who's had a refund, so the win-back email doesn't go somewhere embarrassing.
That's five rules, and none of them is exotic. On the free plan you pick one of them and write the other four on a sticky note. That's not a criticism of the design — free plans exist to be outgrown, and 100 tags would run out quickly regardless. It's just worth knowing that SC's free tier is a demo of the concept, not a working setup, and the first real plan is $5.99 for ten workflows.
On our free plan the rule count isn't the constraint. You can write all five, and what runs out is the 100 processed events — after which it's five cents each rather than a stop.
"Customer Tagging" means customers
This one costs real money and it's easy to miss, because the app name says it plainly and most of us skim app names.
SC Customer Tagging tags customers. Its plans are denominated in customer tags. If you also want tags on orders — fulfilment status, payment gateway, discount code used, shipping region, anything that lives on the order rather than the person — that's a different Shop Circle app, on a different subscription, with its own usage pricing. Two apps, two bills, two rule interfaces, and two places to look when a tag doesn't appear.
Ours is one app covering both. A rule can fire on customers/create, customers/update, orders/create or orders/fulfilled, and the same rule can write tags onto the order and the customer at once. If you only ever want customer tags, that's a feature you aren't using and you should weight it at zero. If you're the kind of store that tags orders for a fulfilment workflow and tags the customer for a marketing segment, it's the whole ballgame.
Backdating costs extra on both sides
Worth saying because it cuts against us as much as for us: neither app tags your history for free.
SC charges $10 for the first tier of backdated orders and $2 per additional tier. We charge for bulk past-order processing too, as a one-time usage charge on top of your plan. If your reason for installing a tagging app is "I have three years of orders and no segments," budget for that on either app. The free plans will not do it, and any comparison that pretends otherwise is selling you something.
Hard caps versus overages, and why we picked the worse-looking one
A cap and an overage fail differently, and the difference matters more than the price.
Hit SC's tag limit and the app stops applying tags. Your bill is exactly what you agreed to. What breaks is the data, quietly, on the day you crossed the line — and tags that were never applied don't show up as an error, they show up months later as a segment that's missing people.
Hit our included processes and the tagging keeps going at three to five cents an event. Nothing silently stops. The obvious downside is that a busy month costs more than you planned, and if you're doing real volume you should be on the $19.99 Enterprise plan where the number is unlimited and the bill is flat. We think a predictable bill is easier to fix than a segment with a hole in it, but that's a judgement call and you're allowed to disagree with it.
An honest read on the ratings
59 reviews at 5.0 against our 12 at 4.7, and one of our twelve is a one-star. Shop Circle is a larger company with a portfolio of apps and a support organisation to match. If review volume is how you de-risk an install, they win that comparison and it's not close.
What review counts don't tell you is whether the app's meter fits your store, which is the thing this whole post is about. A 5.0-star app on the wrong plan shape still costs you either money or data.
How to actually choose
Go and count two numbers before you install anything.
How many distinct tagging rules do you want live? If it's one or two, SC's Starter plan at $5.99 for ten workflows is comfortable and you should take it. If it's a dozen and growing, a workflow cap is a ceiling you'll keep paying to raise.
How many orders and new customers do you process a month? That's roughly our meter. Under a couple of hundred, our $5.99 Basic covers it. Well over a thousand, go straight to Enterprise and stop thinking about it.
Then ask the one question that decides it outright: do you need order tags? If yes, price SC as two subscriptions, because that's what it is.
FAQ
Can I run both apps at once? Technically yes, and it's a reasonable way to trial. Just don't point two apps at the same tag name — you'll get a tug-of-war where each one re-applies or removes a tag the other just changed, and the activity logs won't make it obvious.
What counts as one "process" on Taggify? One resource evaluated against your rules — a new order, an updated customer — not one tag written. A single event that matches four rules and writes six tags is one process, not six.
Does either app tag products? Neither of these does. Both are scoped to customers and orders.
Will tags I've already applied disappear if I downgrade? Tags live on the Shopify record, not inside the app, so existing tags stay. What changes is whether new ones keep being written.
Count your rules, count your monthly events, and check whether order tags are in scope. That's the whole decision, and it takes about five minutes with your own admin open.
